A little touch of elegance and style in a country pub

About The Yorkshire Grey

A Potted History

The Yorkshire Grey dates back to the early part of the 19th century and was originally a domestic residence.

We are at this time unable to find out exactly when it became a public house but we believe that the two front rooms were turned into bars and were serviced through a small hatch from the living quarters.

Many people ask where the name the Yorkshire Grey came from. There seems to be little documented history to be found, but we are led to believe that the local community centered on farming and used the Shire horses to work the land. (The Yorkshire Grey is a breed of Shire Horse and can be linked to medieval times when they were used to carry knights wearing their very heavy armour). As the local hostelry it adopted the name. (Should you know differently and would care to inform us we would love to hear from you via e-mail at the following address ).

And to the current day, the Yorkshire Grey has changed hands numerous times over the past few years and has gone through peaks and troughs. It was in November 2004 that it was purchased freehold by the current owners John Garner and Nigel Humphryson.

John is responsible for the day-to-day operation and has been in the service industry for the last 25 years starting as a chef and moving to front of house four-star hotel operations both in the UK and abroad, as well as spending time as a purser and trainer for one of the UK's major airline companies.

Nigel, although seen regularly late in the evening and at weekends primarily works in his other business of hairdressing and beauty and has a salon called Rage located in Tamworth in Staffordshire and Tewkesbury Gloucestershire. The website for these can be found www.ragehairandbeauty.co.uk.

To the future, after establishing the business as a fine dining operation (although we still openly welcome you for just a drink) we have decided to move the business forward and are hoping to add eight letting bedrooms to the existing property. We will also add pitched roofs to either side of the existing building in order to make it look more aesthetically pleasing from the front. The extension will also add additional storage, refrigeration, staff changing rooms and a new toilet facility that will allow us to provide for the disabled and also baby-changing facilities that are just not possible at this time. We hope that both old and new customers will enjoy the improvements.

We hope you found this information of interest and if you are viewing our website for the first time and are thinking of visiting the Yorkshire Grey we very much look forward to welcoming you
